But to me they are more a style completing the chosen lighting setup. Broad lighting is when the subjects face is slightly turned away from centre and the side of the face which is toward the camera is broader is in the light. This is the broad side of the face - from camera position it is wider than the short side of the face the side that is turned away from the camera.

What Does Broad and Short Light Mean When it comes to face lighting people tend to consider broad and short light as photography lighting setups. This produces a larger area of light on the face and a shadow side which appears smaller. Position the subject so that the part of their face thats receiving the most light is also the part thats closest to the camera.

This type of light can make a face look fuller so its ideal for those with very narrow faces. Broad lighting widens the face and gives a brighter more natural result. Some of these are covered quite well.
